East Coast Route
Our Region
Our Eastern region is one of the busiest in our network, spanning much of the East of England, and carrying over one billion passengers each year. The region is home to four of Network Rail’s routes, the Anglia, East Coast, East Midlands, and North & East routes.
Our Eastern region plays an essential role for many commuters getting to and from some of the country’s busiest cities, including London, Newcastle, Leeds, and Sheffield. As well as making sure our passengers can travel to their destinations safely, we play an important part in moving freight, with over a million tonnes travelling through our region each week.

Key Station
We own and operate London King’s Cross, a core hub for travel, dining and memorable experiences. It’s the home of platform 9 ¾ for Harry Potter’s Hogwarts!
Our Projects
Darlington Station Upgrades
We’re working with Tees Valley Combined Authority, Darlington Borough Council, and London North Eastern Railway to implement a multi-million pound upgrade to Darlington Station. As part of these upgrades, we’ll be providing two new platforms, and a fully accessible and enclosed footbridge linking the new platforms.
We’re also adding new cycle lanes and a multi-storey car park to make accessing the station even easier, as the station becomes an integrated transport hub, improving the region’s local and national transport links.
East Coast Digital Programme
The East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP) is a landmark scheme that will introduce in-cab digital signalling on the southern part of the East Coast Main Line. These upgrades will provide signalling information to drivers, reducing maintenance work on a large amount of lineside equipment. This is expected to reduce the amount of signalling-related engineering work by almost half.
The ECDP will create more punctual services, reducing signal failures, and allowing seamless communication between Signallers and train drivers.
Our Improvements
We’re implementing a £1.2bn upgrade to the East Coast Main Line as part of the national Railway Upgrade Plan. One of our key projects is the East Coast upgrade which will see the replacement of signalling, overhead line equipment, and a new track layout. This will enable an additional two long-distance services an hour into and out of London, improving service reliability and punctuality, and creating up to 10,000 extra seats a day for passengers.
