North East Route

Our Region

Our Eastern region is one of the busiest in our network, spanning much of the East of England, and carrying over one billion passengers each year. The region is home to four of Network Rail’s routes, the Anglia, East Coast, East Midlands, and North & East routes.

Our Eastern region plays an essential role for many commuters getting to and from some of the country’s busiest cities, including London, Newcastle, Leeds, and Sheffield. As well as making sure our passengers can travel to their destinations safely, we play an important part in moving freight, with over a million tonnes travelling through our region each week.

Our Route

The North and East route takes in Yorkshire’s biggest cities, including Sheffield and Leeds, and vital links over the Pennines and into the North East. The route also serves some of the largest cities in the North, including Hull, Bradford, and Huddersfield.

We’re in the process of carrying out improvements throughout the route, playing a vital role in helping to drive economic growth and creating jobs in the north of England. Ongoing work as part of the national Railway Upgrade Plan is already seeing more capacity and more reliable journeys for passengers, as well as facilitating the replacement of Pacers with modern, comfortable trains.

Key Station

Almost 20 million passengers use Leeds station every year! We’re completing a huge redesign of the station to provide new capacity and better services to one of the UK’s busiest stations.

Our Projects

Northumberland Line Project

The Northumberland Line project is reintroducing passenger services between Newcastle and Ashington, having not carried passenger since the 1960’s. As part of this project we’re introducing six new stations; Northumberland Park, Seaton Delaval, Newsham, Blyth Bebside, Bedlington, and Ashington.

The Northumberland Line project will provide vital infrastructure to help deliver the region’s aspirations for population and economic growth, and improve access from towns such as Ashington and Blyth to employment hubs like Newcastle.

Transpennine Route Upgrade

The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) is a multi-billion pound, transformative, long-term railway infrastructure programme that will improve connectivity in the North, with major investment being made to our railway between York and Manchester via Leeds and Huddersfield.

As part of the TRU, we’re improving a number of stations, adding platforms, increasing services, and improving accessibility, meaning that more passengers can use our railway, and can get to their destinations faster.

Our Improvements

The Great North Rail Project (GNRP), part of Britain’s Railway Upgrade Plan, is a vast programme of improvements to transform train travel for customers in the North. The project will enable 2,000 extra services each week, and allow 40,000 more passengers to travel each day. More trains with more seats, running more quickly and more reliably.

The GNRP will improve connections and shorten journey times between key towns and cities, as well as enabling quieter, cleaner, and greener trains through electrifying our railway.

As new opportunities, including jobs, are created and businesses get access to a greater pool of talent, local communities and the wider regional economy will feel the knock-on benefits of FNRP, boosting regional and national growth.
