Scotland Route
Our Region
Scotland’s Railway covers a large geographical area from the Borders to Thurso at the far tip of the North East of Scotland. It provides rapid access along busy commuter routes to our 7 cities, fulfilling a variety of travel needs from business and leisure to daily commuter service, including cross-border services. We’re working on a number of projects to create more space on the network, improve journey times, and the frequency of services, as well as enhancing facilities for our passengers, who take 107 million journeys with us each year.
Our Route
All railway infrastructure in the country sits within the Scotland route – part of the ScotRail Alliance. We are committed to putting passengers and freight customers at the heart of how we run Scotland’s Railway.
We operate the largest suburban rail network outside London which meets the daily needs of customers into Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city. Scotland’s Railway provides links between communities and employment, industries and markets. It contributes up to £1.3bn each year to Scotland’s economy and employs 13,000 people, 3,000 of which are Network Rail Colleagues.
Key Station
Glasgow Central is the busiest station in our network, with over 20 million passengers using the station in 2022-23!
Our projects
Glasgow Queen Street Redevelopment
Glasgow Queen Street station is Scotland’s third busiest railway station, providing rail connections to and from the city to the wider Glasgow area as well as throughout the country. We are expecting the number of people using the station to increase by 40% by 2030. To manage this growth, we’ve invested £120 million to redevelop and expand the station as part of the Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme.
The redevelopment of the station involved us modernising the building internally and externally, as well as expanding the concourse to allow for more passengers. We have extended platforms throughout the station, and added new facilities whilst improving existing ones.
Upgrading the Brighton Main Line
The Glasgow to Barrhead electrification project is part of a Scottish Government investment to decarbonise passenger services across Scotland’s Railway by providing greener trains onto the route. Many passenger and freight journeys are already made on electrified routes in Scotland. By converting the remainder of the diesel-powered railway network to being powered by electricity, this will result in fewer greenhouse gas emissions, generating an even greener railway.
As part of the Glasgow to Barrhead project, we made a number of improvements to our stations, including extending platforms, refurbishing signalling systems, installing new footbridges, and making the stations more accessible to passengers.
Our Improvements
We believe that a better railway for Scotland is possible. And we’re investing over £4 billion to make it a reality. With over 20 active projects being undertaken, we’re delivering faster services, additional seats, extra space, improved stations, and new facilities. We are also working hard to make sure that our stations are accessible and easy to use for all passengers who use our railway.
To deliver our vision for a better railway in Scotland, we have 6 key priorities that underpin the projects we undertake. These are to deliver a punctual and reliable railway, to improve capacity through delivering new rolling stock and infrastructure enhancements, to improve efficiency and value for money, to ensure a more effective integration between Network Rail and rail operators, to deliver infrastructure resilient to major disruption, and to work as one to build the best railway Scotland has ever had.
