Wales route

Our Region

Our Wales & Western region includes more than 2,700 miles of railway with a 5,500-strong workforce. We serve the communities and businesses of Wales, the Thames Valley, West of England, and the South West Peninsula.

We transport over 120 million passengers each year to key employment hubs including London, Cardiff, Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool, as well as connecting business and leisure travellers to London Heathrow, Cardiff, Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, and London Gatwick airports. We support leisure and tourism in all these areas, and support critical freight services, moving half a million tonnes every week.

Our Route

The Wales and Borders route operates and maintains the railway across Wales and the border counties of England. The route links major towns and cities, including Cardiff, Newport, Swansea, Wrexham and Shrewsbury, connecting people, businesses, and communities. We also provide connectivity to coastal communities and rural areas including some of the most breathtaking scenery anywhere in Britain.

This is an exciting time for the route; With the completion of electrification in 2020, including through the Severn Tunnel, there is now a seamless electric rail link between Cardiff and London for the first time.

Key Station

Cardiff Central is a key station on our route, serving 10 million passengers each year.

Our projects

Restoring the Barmouth Viaduct

We’re spending £30m to carry out the biggest restoration of the Barmouth Viaduct in it’s 150 year history, to protect the well-loved bridge for generations and maintain it’s magnificent appearance.

The project will see us completely restoring the viaduct in a way that doesn’t threaten its industrial heritage and Grade II listed status. We will be replacing its components on a ‘like for like’ basis to make sure it retains its original appearance. We’ll also be carrying out additional work during the restoration, including replacing all the timber main beans.

Creating Accessible Stations

We’re committed to providing easy and equal access to our railway for all passengers. As part of this commitment, we are making six stations on our route fully accessible for the first time with the construction of new footbridges and lifts.

Flint, Abergavenny, Cwmbran, Llanelli, and Newtown stations are all set to get brand new footbridges with lifts, while Ludlow station will see a lift added to its existing footbridge. These upgrades will mean that all passengers, especially those with limited ability, will have a step-free, accessible route to and between platforms.

Improvements on this line

We’re supporting our partners at Transport for Wales as they deliver a £5bn transformation of the network in Wales with new trains, more frequent, greener services, and improvements to stations across Wales and Borders. This transformation project will improve the experience for passengers using our railway, making our services more reliable, reducing delays, and increasing capacity.

As part of these upgrades, we have developed a multi-million-pound plan to improve the resilience of the Newport to Gloucester line, which connects South Wales with the West Country, Midlands, and North of England, providing a vital link for passengers. As the line runs along the Severn Estuary it’s exposed to rain, wind, and sea, which has seen it regularly devastated by landslips. We’re strengthening the infrastructure around the rail, making it more resilient to adverse weather, and keeping services running.
