Rail Operations Careers – Home

Rail Operations matter to millions.

Keep trains moving and people safe.

Running the safest railway in Europe is a team effort. Our teams work across the UK to operate and maintain our railways, providing the best possible service for millions who rely on the railway, every day.

We’re responsible for more than 20,000 miles of track, almost 6,000 level crossings and around 2,500 stations. Our operational functions ensure these services are efficient and safe. From Signallers and Electrical Control Room Operators in our regional rail centres, to Crossing Keepers on our tracks, we work across our routes day and night to keep the UK moving.

Roles in Operations

Signallers

As a Signaller you’ll be responsible for everything that moves along your section or track. You’ll need to react to changing situations, make quick decisions and stay calm under pressure. Every day, you’ll face new challenges, some you expect and others you don’t.

Our routes matter

Our routes operate, maintain and renew infrastructure to deliver a safe and reliable railway for passengers and freight customers. Each of our 14 routes is run locally to ensure we can work closely with the relevant train and freight operating companies to meet the needs of our passengers and businesses.

When you apply for any of our signaller roles, you’ll need to select the route you want to work on. Take a look at a route near you to discover what they’re responsible for and the projects they’re working on, to find out how you could join us in keeping our railway running safely and efficiently.
